The Role of the Chief Learning Officer in the Age of AI

Employee experience is getting crucial for companies. Thus, to improve this, companies are increasingly hiring or promoting existing leaders to positions like Chief Employee Experience Officer and Chief Learning officers. At the heart of these moves, the aim is to make the employee experience delightful. Learning and development program is a crucial part of employee experience. Thus, chief learning officers need to treat L& D programs with care. Artificial intelligence coming in, CLOs need to embrace and implement programs accordingly.

Artificial intelligence in learning and development

Artificial intelligence has been transforming organizational operations and processes, including learning and development. This makes it essential for chief learning officers to be aware of how artificial intelligence could help make employee learning & development programs more effective.

Across the industry, artificial intelligence has been successful in automating iterative processes. It is doing the same to learning & development. With artificial intelligence, learning and development have come a long way. It has proven transformational in the following ways —

  1. Assisted intelligence: As described earlier, Artificial intelligence has automated iterative tasks. Similarly, it can be used to predict learning needs by looking at historical learning material or search records.
  2. Find areas for learning: AI can help employees find areas where employees lack or outside their scope of work. For example, it can uncover skill gap, product knowledge, and soft competencies.
  3. Autonomous devices: Finally, artificial intelligence can provide devices which can guide learners through courses, assignments, tests, and lastly score and provide them feedback.

 How can CLOs embrace AI

Keeping up with technology is an essential work for any leader. CLOs specifically can do the following to stay in the loop —

  1. Embrace cutting-edge technology

AI has been everywhere, but AI applications that yield business results are still in experimental stages. Thus, CLOs need to cut through the hype and see AI objectively and decide which application will work for a company.

  1. Become digital evangelist

CLOs are generally tasked with operational strategies and often their stake in digital transformation is low. Chief Technology Officer or Chief Data Officer are concerned with the technology aspect of the company. But AI making improvements in learning and development, CLOs need to stay cognizant and look to get a buy-in from other C-level leaders to implement AI-based learning and development programs.

  1. Prioritize collaboration

CLOs are an important part of organization growth machinery. They ensure that every employee is constantly learning and ready to take on challenges. Thus, CLOs should constantly interact with other C-level officers to understand their learning requirements and see how AI can help meet these goals. Thus, AI-based learning will be able to take an organization to new heights.

 Conclusion

In simple words, Chief learning officers aren’t just responsible for the learning and growth of individuals. They are also held responsible for methods, strategies, and operations of L& D programs.
